Biography: With a background in the music and entertainment industries, I found podcasting to be an amazing convergence of technologies and communications mediums. Podcasting held the promise of transforming not only entertainment and media distribution, but perhaps more importantly, reimagining a format in which the content is merely the meeting place for creators and their audiences, a place where meaningful new collaborations could spontaneously emerge, and conversations could take content into new, exciting and often unanticipated directions. Knowing a good thing when I see it, I had to get in on this.
My first podcast, www.clubkidcast.com, left me a little disillusioned with the podcast vehicle. It seemed that most of us creating content for podcasts were only using it as another mass media vehicle that harnessed the web (rather than TV or radio) as the distribution channel. We still had no idea who our audiences were, and a number of us didn't care, so long as the download statistics looked good enough to attract advertising or sponsorship dollars. We took a new and incredibly promising technology away from the people, and tried to conglomeratize it right off the bat. We cheated the technology from really being able to reach its fullest potential as a medium that allowed for discussion, dialogue and conversation. I'm sorry about that.
I think the most exciting part of podcasting is the audience, and the way that inspired content creators can find one another and build social connections across continents, and create transformative conversations that an entire globe can join in and benefit from.
