Interesting as always. - Reviewer: Issybelle99 04/27/09 11:18 AM EDT
Full Comment: I am just finishing up listening to your latest installment. The sound quality is off on this one, you might want to look into that. I found it interesting that the one ex pat you met didn't speak any Dutch. While I don't doubt that in most of Europe one doesn't *need* to speak the local language to survive, he unfortunately is missing a lot of the point. There is a lot of subtle nuance in a foreign language that doesn't translate and contributes to a greater understanding of culture. I also find that my understanding of English grammar and thought pattern improved immeasurably after learning Swedish. And while the Dutch are probably polite in speaking English, they'd likely be *much* friendlier meeting an American who had learned to speak their language. When I speak Swedish I often get free drinks, free taxi rides, even free merchandise and CDs. So, my hunch is he's missing out and doesn't know it.
